A New Star Is Born As EVs Reach 19% Market Share In Ecuador In August!
Electric vehicles are taking off in Ecuador, a country that just a few years ago had almost no EV sales at all. In August, battery electric vehicles (EVs that run only on a battery) made up nearly 14% of new car sales, and plug-in hybrids (cars with both a battery and a gas engine, charged from an outlet) added another 5.5%, for a combined 19.3% market share. Total EV sales for the month came close to 3,000 units, with growth driven partly by the end of government fuel subsidies, which pushed gasoline and diesel prices up and made electric options more appealing.
The market is also getting more competitive. BYD still leads sales but its share has dropped sharply as Chevrolet and Kia gain ground with more affordable models. One notable entry is the Kia EV2, built in Slovakia and priced around $23,000, making it one of the first reasonably priced European-made EVs sold in Latin America. Another is the Chery iCar V23, a rugged electric SUV aimed at rural and off-road buyers, priced similarly to a gas-powered Suzuki Jimny.
None of this changes rebate programs or incentives in the US, since this news is about Ecuador's car market, not American energy or weatherization programs. But it's a sign that affordable EVs with decent range are spreading quickly in markets outside the US, which could eventually mean more model choices and competition reaching American buyers as manufacturers scale up production for these growing markets.
