A new Arizona plant is going after the rare earth supply crunch

September 10, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 32

A company called Cyclic Materials has opened a large rare earth recycling plant in Mesa, Arizona, the kind of facility that could eventually mean more of these materials get sourced domestically instead of from overseas. Rare earth magnets are used in EV motors, wind turbine generators, and a wide range of electronics, and most of that supply chain has been concentrated in China, which leaves manufacturers exposed to trade disruptions.

The Mesa plant can process up to 25,000 metric tons of magnet-bearing products a year, pulling them apart to recover magnet material along with copper, aluminum, and steel. More than 7,000 metric tons have already arrived at the facility, and the company expects to start shipping recovered material to US customers later this month. Cyclic is also building a second site in South Carolina, expected to open in 2028, that will handle both magnet recovery and further refining.

This is mainly industry news rather than something that changes what a homeowner needs to do right now. But if you're weighing an EV purchase, a heat pump, or other electric equipment down the road, more domestic rare earth recycling capacity could help ease supply pressures and pricing for the motors and components inside that equipment over time. There's no rebate, program, or direct action tied to this for homeowners today.
