A House Shaped by Climate

A newly built house outside Quito, Ecuador, called Arrayanes House, shows how a home's shape and layout can handle heating and cooling without a furnace or air conditioner. The 5,000-square-foot house sits on a hillside lot next to a golf course, in a mild high-altitude climate. Its design relies on thermal mass (heavy materials like stone that absorb and slowly release heat), cross-ventilation, sun control, and a central courtyard to keep indoor temperatures comfortable year-round.

The site's slope and the owner's wish for privacy, without a fence, shaped the layout. Architects built a long stone wall along the street-facing side of the house to block views from the road and golf course while keeping the home open on the inside. Behind that wall, the house opens onto a sheltered courtyard, and large operable glass walls surround that courtyard, letting in air and light while staying private from the street.

The design places the house low against the sloped lot so it looks like it grows out of the land, rather than towering over it. While this project is in Ecuador, its approach is a useful reminder that features like thick walls, shaded openings, cross-breezes, and a protected outdoor space can reduce how much a home depends on mechanical heating and cooling, something worth considering in any climate with big swings between sun and shade or day and night temperatures.
