A $5M startup claims rare earth-free electric motor breakthrough

July 13, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 35

A small startup in India called Vimag Labs says it has patented an electric motor that works without rare-earth magnets, the material used in almost every EV motor today and mostly refined in China. Instead of fixed magnets, the motor generates its magnetic field using power electronics and software. The company has raised $5 million and is running early pilots with two-wheeler and passenger vehicle makers, but the motor is not in mass production, and its claim of matching magnet-based performance hasn't been independently confirmed.

This matters because China controls the vast majority of rare-earth processing used in EV motors, and it has used export controls on those materials as leverage in trade disputes. A pause on the toughest restrictions is in effect through late 2026, but automakers are still racing to find alternatives in case tighter controls return. Tesla, GM, Stellantis, Honda, and others are all pursuing their own rare-earth-free or reduced-magnet motor designs, and none has reached mass production yet.

None of this changes anything about your home right now. It is a signal that the EV industry is trying to reduce dependence on Chinese-controlled materials, which could eventually affect EV prices or availability, but the technology is still in early testing. There is nothing here tied to home energy upgrades, rebates, or purchasing decisions today.
