50% Rise in Volkswagen Electric Vehicle Orders in Europe in 2026
Volkswagen's electric vehicle orders in Europe jumped more than 50 percent so far this year compared to the end of last year, according to the company's first-half sales report. A big driver is the new "Electric Urban Car Family," a lineup of smaller, more affordable electric models sold under the VW, Škoda, and CUPRA brands. Three of the four models are on sale so far, and together they've already pulled in more than 54,000 orders, which Volkswagen says beat its own expectations. Electric vehicles now make up over 30 percent of the company's order backlog in Europe.
This is mostly a story about the European car market, not the US one. Volkswagen actually reported a 69 percent drop in electric vehicle sales in the United States for the first half of the year, which the company ties to the end of federal EV tax credits and higher tariffs. So while European buyers are increasingly choosing electric options from VW, Škoda, and CUPRA, American shoppers are facing a different landscape, with less financial help available than before.
For homeowners thinking about their own electric vehicle purchase, the takeaway is less about Volkswagen specifically and more a reminder that the incentives shaping EV affordability vary a lot by country and have shifted recently in the US. If you're weighing an EV purchase, it's worth checking what federal, state, or utility incentives are currently available where you live, since those programs have changed this year.
