40 Under 40: A Chance to Shine the Spotlight on HVAC’s Next Generation

August 3, 2026 · ACHR News · Score: 24

This is a trade-industry story rather than one about home upgrades directly, but it points to something homeowners eventually feel: a shortage of HVAC technicians. Industry group ACHR News runs an annual "40 Under 40" award recognizing young HVAC professionals, and this piece is a call for nominations. It notes that a report from Bring Back the Trades projects nearly 1.4 million skilled trade jobs will go unfilled by 2030, including more than 192,000 HVAC technician positions, as older workers retire faster than new ones enter the field.

There are some signs of hope for the pipeline. A June survey by SimplyWise found that people aged 18 to 29 see HVAC work as one of the more "AI-proof" careers, and nearly half said they would consider trade school over a four-year college. Big tech companies and groups like the Department of War and Mike Rowe's foundation have also started funding trades scholarships.

For homeowners, none of this changes anything about your house today. But a shrinking pool of technicians has real long-term effects: it can mean longer waits for HVAC repairs, installs, or heat pump upgrades, and possibly higher labor costs, as demand for qualified workers outpaces supply. Efforts like this one are aimed at drawing more young people into the field, which over time affects how easy it is to find someone to service or upgrade your heating and cooling system.
