17 Manufacturers of Heat Pump Water Heaters Are Now on the Market (With More Coming Soon)
The market for heat pump water heaters just got bigger. These water heaters pull heat from the surrounding air to warm your tank's water, using much less electricity than a standard electric resistance water heater. With two new entrants, Lennox and Reservoir, the number of brands selling them in the US has reached 17, up from just a handful a decade ago. Two more manufacturers are expected to join soon.
The lineup now includes familiar names like A.O. Smith, Bosch, GE, LG, Rheem, and Bradford White, along with newer companies such as Cala, Ecological, and Reservoir. Most make standard 240-volt units that plug into a typical water heater outlet, but some now offer 120-volt plug-in models that need no special wiring, and others sell split systems, where the water tank sits separately from the outdoor heat pump unit, similar to how some central air conditioners are set up.
More brands competing for your business generally means more choices in size, features, and price, which can make it easier to find a model that fits your home and budget. It also signals that manufacturers expect heat pump water heaters to become the standard choice: federal efficiency rules taking effect in 2029 will require heat pump technology for electric water heaters over 35 gallons. If your current water heater is nearing the end of its life, this is a technology with a lot more options than it had even a few years ago, and a growing number of companies betting on its future.
